1. Tom Hunter Exhibits Findings in Birmingham, UK

Today sees the launch of ‘Findings’, Tom Hunter’s outdoor exhibition of 50 large format pinhole photographs taking place in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter and Cole Business District, two areas which are also the subject of the work.

Tom Hunter says about the photographs: ‘In some ways this project for me is like a ghost hunt, searching out the ghosts of old buildings, industries, businesses and people. This is also how I feel about my late Grandmother, who I’ve never met, an Irish immigrant, who worked as a barmaid in a Birmingham pub. In my mind I have visited her on this trip at The Bull pub, by St. Chads cathedral. So whilst I have been exploring the buildings that hold Birmingham’s past in their walls, roofs and catacombs I see the ghosts that dwell there. This came to life whilst photographing the Lost and Found bar, with its incredible ornate lobby, pillars, tiled floors and ceilings which retell its past as the rich mans bank at the heart of an industrial empire. I was taken out of the light by the landlady and into the bowels of the vaulted cellars to find huge safe doors which once held all the riches that Birmingham produced but now holds ingredients for the pub kitchen. As the colossal door swung closed the landlady told of the ghost that dwells beneath the marbled floors after the soul’s owner was trapped and starved to death in agony and isolation. Following this spine-chilling revelation I saw the ghost appear in the crypt of St Chads church in paintings and in the catacombs of the canal sidings beneath the railway lines, and in the very fabric at the heart of Birmingham.’
